Winter Moon

Posted by on Sep 5, 2013 in 2011, Songs | 0 comments

by Lisa Forrest and David Mussen

Winter Moon was inspired by Arctic Owl & Winter Moon, a fantastic watercolor created by artist Charles Burchfield, combined with a poem that I wrote back in 2006 called “Sleep Song.” The extremely talented David Mussen composed the music, and along with Jonathan’s amazing sound engineering — helped to paint this very dream-like piece.

Lisa Forrest: Vocals
Jonathan Hughes: Bass, Guitar, Keyboards
Rob Lynch: Drums
David Mussen: Acoustic Guitar, Clarinet, Glockenspiel
Sally Fehskens: Background Vocals

The hawks circle over us
the snow trees bend and weep
words float and dive
frantic in your sleep

when you unlock your doors
and you wander about
it’s only a dream
flailing from your mouth

the hawks circle over us
the snow trees bend and weep
echoing your name
in a land strange and deep

wrapped tender in a voice
holding your cold hand
along the frozen gravel road
across field stretched land

where the sky washes gold
over fear and doubt heaped
and the hawks cry and swoop
catching dreams not made to keep

pile them high in the sky
the long white sky

open your eyes
hear the wings wide sweep
open your eyes

how much we can see
fall with me and forget
fall with me and sleep

Long Ago

by David Mussen

The best songs have a mystery to them, a little room where the imagination of listener can breathe. What is left unsaid in the lyrics is where the story lies.

Holidays on the Range

by David Mussen

This song takes place in the not so distant future when robots control all of the world, rather than the two thirds currently under their domain. I was thinking Gene Autry.

Uncle Cisco’s Nudie Pen

Posted by on Sep 5, 2013 in 2011, Songs | 0 comments

by Lisa Forrest and Jim Whitford

This song is what happens when you share a particularly funny childhood memory with Jonathan Hughes. I told the story about “playing in Uncle Cisco’s truck”, Jonathan said “you should write a song about that” — and I did.  Endless thanks to my talented friend Jim Whitford, who helped tweak the lyrics and worked out the total bluesy feel of the song.  Jim’s guitar playing in this tune is so good…it creeps into your head and takes up eternal residence.

Sally Fehskens: Background Vocals
Lisa Forrest: Vocals
Jim Whitford: Guitar

by Rob Lynch and Jim Zito

Designed to make us laugh as we wrote each line, some people are just superior at wrapping gifts. This one came quick, as Jim and I hadn’t made music together in a while and I was visiting on vacation. Full of joy, this one was.

The Best Things

I wanted to write something as a duet, a sort of dialogue between Doug and Lisa, but they arrange it all themselves and made it sound all nice and purdy.

Winter Bells

I had been reading Bells In Winter by Czeslaw Milosz when I wrote this song. The last verse was really written with Alex in mind so it meant a lot to me that she sang this song.

Dee Adams: Background Vocals
Jonathan Hughes: Bass, Guitar, Keyboards

Snow Blossom

by David Mussen

I was thinking a lot of that wonderful little book of translations by Kenneth Rexroth 100 Poems from the Japanese, when I worked on this song. I remember it came to me rather late in the game and Dee came to the rescue and as usual knocked it out of the park in no time.
